Welcome. Cheyenne is a great place to live and raise a family in a small town atmosphere. Cheyenne began as one of the tent cities of Gen. Grenville Dodge supporting the building of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1867. The tents gave way to a more permanent town when the military established a post nearby to protect the railroad activity. Today it is the state capital of the nation’s leading energy supplier. But, Cheyenne still maintains its western heritage and flavor, hosting the famous “Daddy of ‘em All” Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo the last full week of July each year.
Recreation. Outdoor activities abound and the city has over 600 acres of parks and 15 miles of Greenway. Professional sports are just a short drive away to Denver where you can follow the Rockies, Broncos, Avalanche and the Nuggets. Likewise, the University of Wyoming is less than an hour away where you can take in Division I sports activities. Churches. Cheyenne maintains a high degree of religious acceptance and tolerance with over 100 churches and synagogues representing almost all faiths. In addition to worship, they offer social, educational and community services to members. Education. Cheyenne is in the Laramie County School District No.1, which includes 26 elementary, 3 junior high and three high schools. The Laramie County Community College and branches of Preston University, Park College and Embry-Riddle offer higher learning opportunities. Military. F.E. Warren Air Force Base is an Air Force Space Command base with over 3500 active duty personnel supporting and maintaining 200 intercontinental ballistic missiles, including the only Peacekeeper missile squadron. The Wyoming Army National Guard and Wyoming Air National Guard are also headquartered in Cheyenne. The VA maintains a VA Regional hospital here as well. |
